2012

In 2012 Caloundra received the Keep Australia Beautiful National Tidy Towns Award in Canberra.  Members of FOCL, together with other community groups, played a large role in winning this prestigious award for Caloundra.  The judging panel felt the environment criteria was met by these local groups being proactive in events such as Clean Up Australia Day, World Turtle Day, National Tree Planting Day, Weedbusters Week and partnering with local community and schools to ensure the message of conservation is instilled for future generations. The Currimundi Lake Dynamics Study was finalised and a group was formed in 2012 which included FOCL members and the whole of the catchment.  This group will be looking at management and water issues relating to Currimundi catchment. FOCL partnered with catchment groups to plant 2000 trees on National Tree Planting Day.  Weedbusters Week was also a great success with our working bee group removing 29 bags of weeds near the boat ramp. A partnership was entered into with QPWS to weed and revegetate in the Currimundi Lake (Kathleen McArthur) Conservation Park.  This is hoped to be a yearly partnership working in this area one day a month. A formal request was made to the Sunshine Coast Council to revisit the Currimundi Precinct Plan to look at installing a footpath with bollards in Hargreaves Street for the safety of pedestrians as this area is becoming an extremely busy area during the summer months.
